powerful, ubiquitous symbol. But too
many people thought we were calling
ourselves Hamas Films [laughs]. So we
dropped that.
We discussed "The Promised Land."
Then we thought, "That's too Jewish."
Promises connotes that children are the
promise of the future, as well as [connot-
ing] Middle East negotiations, which
often feel like promises kept, promises
broken.

JN: Do you consider yourselves reli-

gious Jews, or are you more secular?
BZG: I was religious for a year when I
was 12 or 13. I consider myself a secular
Jew, but very traditional. I come from a
traditional family, so I feel incredibly
Jewish culturally; and connected to
Judaism.
JS: My son had a traditional bris. I
respect and honor many of the rituals.
But I'm not religious.

JN: Did the events of Sept. 11 and
their aftermath affect how you think
about the film?
BZG: One thing that was quite amazing
was that after Sept. 11, the interest in
the film mushroomed. So many people
want to organize screenings.
People are looking for some material
with some depth about this part of the
world. But because the film deals with
this generation's deep difficulty and pain
and irreversibility of identity-based
hatred, it's very universal.

JN: How did making the film change
you?
JS: The first time I really spoke to
Palestinians was in 1995. I realized that
here I am: this pretty well educated, fair-
ly enlightened woman, who'd grown up
in Berkeley, Calif, and I was walking
around with some fixed stereotypes.
And I thought, "If I'm walking
around with this, everyone else must be,
too." I wanted to introduce audiences to
the people who were opening up my
mind and my heart.
B.Z., Carlos and I wanted to make
people care again. The Middle East con-
flict often seems so intractable; people
get cynical and stop caring. Promises
makes people care again. ❑

Promises is scheduled to air on
PBS's P 0.V, a showcase of inde-
pendent, nonfiction films, at 9
p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, on
