hree people with Detroit roots who live in Israel commented
on how they are coping with the terrorist threats in Israel.
Former Oak Parker Aharon "Arthur" Friedman lives in
Jerusalem and goes about life in his Arzei Habira neighbor-
hood.
"The intifid4 (uprising) has not affect-
ed my daily routine and I continue every-
thing I've been doing for the past 11
years," Friedman said.
"One of the things that I do is attend
prayers at the Western Wall on Friday
night and walk back with a group ofpeo-
ple though the Arab section of the Old
City."
Tally Halachmi-Nissim, a native of
Petach Tikvah near Tel Aviv, worked as a
physical therapist at Children's Hospital
of Michigan in the late 1980s. She has
since returned to Israel, married, and is
mother of two young daughters.
"I don't go to shopping malls," she said.
"When I drive behind a bus, I'm nervous.
The police can do nothing. And I'm not
taking o- any
any risks.
"For Chanukah, there are many plays
and shows for the children and we have
tickets to take them, and I'm nervous. I'll
still go because I promised them. If I
wouldn't have promised them, I would
have thrown away the tickets.
"I don't know what the solution is. A
Berlin Wall?"
Nissim still believes in a peace process,
as she did more than a decade ago in
Detroit.
"You have-to deal with facts, not wish-
ful thinking," she said. "The only thing
that's changed since my Detroit days is
that I have two more souls to take care of
"Peace is the only solution. If the Arabs
think they have something to lose, it will
keep them from doing foolish things."
Erica Davis of Farmington Hills is a
University of Michigan graduate who
became more interested in Judaism while

neighborhood of Jerusalem.
"Jerusalem's absolutely beautiful," she
said. "It's such an amazing place to live. It's very intense compared to
Detroit.
"When i first got here, I was homesick. I'm starting to get used to all of
it and am beginning to love it.
"I think Israel will always be able to rebuild itself. I think things will be
OK. You can't let it effect you or bring you down. Because if you live in a
bubble, you let them win." 7:
