He was a resi- dential builder, a member of the Michigan Builders Association and an alumnus of the University of Michigan. Mr. Goodman is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ruth Goodman; daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Dr. David Shonkoff of Georgia, Karen and John Mucha of Birmingham; son, Joel H. Goodman of Lansing; grandchildren, Joel E. Goodman, Jennifer Shonkoff, Lauren Shonkoff, Rachel and Laura Mucha. MARVIN GORMAN, 72, former Detroiter of Key West, Fla. He was an internationally known scientist who dis- covered the antibiotics known as cephalosporins. Mr. Gorman graduated with a bache- lor's degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan. He later joined a research group at Wayne State University and earned his Ph.D. in 1954. He was then awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the Technion in Haifa, Israel. In 1956, Mr. Gorman joined Eli Lily & Co. - in Indianapolis, where he became the company's leading researcher. His work on the plant vinca rosa led to the discovery of and-cancer alkaloids. In 1982, Mr. Gorman became vice president of infectious disease research for Bristol Myers. Later, he became general manager of Oncogen, Bristol Myers, a small biotechnology company in Seattle. After he retired in 1991, Mr. Gorman earned a pilot's license and made a 3 '/'- hour glider flight. In 1992, he was a vol- unteer in Modra Slovakia for the International Executive Service Corps, helping to modernize local pharmaceuti- cal companies. During his career, he obtained 18 patents and published 150 papers. Mr. Gorman is survived by his wife, Lura Chaney Gorman; children, David (Hana) Gorman, Judith (Larry) Zollman, Debra (Bob) Stobaugh; grandchildren, Kyla and Rachel Gorman, Eric and Chris Zollrnan, Ben and Katie Stobaugh; stepchildren, Eric Lynch, Lisa Lynch, Hillary (Danny) Dever, Victoria Infante and Jennifer Diaz.
