amps come in all shapes and sizes. There are the
traditional camps with a variety of activities, such

as hiking, crafts, swimming and nature. There are

music camps, drama camps, sports camps, science

camps, computer camps, camps for kids with can-

cer, kids with asthma, kids with kidney disease,

kids with muscular dystrophy, overweight kids,

kids with learning or developmental disabilities.

For teenagers, there are travel camps.

Many Jewish parents send their children to a
nonprofit Jewish camp under the auspices of a
religious group, a Zionist youth organization,
Jewish center or a Jewish federation agency, or
to a private camp owned by Jews and attended
mostly by Jews.
"People in this area do what their friends and
relatives and neighbors do. They're not real
adventuresome," said Susie Pappas of
Bloomfield Hills, who ran the local office of
Student Camp and Trip Advisors for seven
years. The free service matches children with
camp programs that meet their particular
needs.
But some parents don't want their kids to do
what everyone else is doing in the summer.
They've found camps where their children will
meet people they wouldn't ordinarily meet and
