When Ben Kasle bought the
Vineyards, he renamed the downstairs
Coco's, and the Vineyards Annex,
now Il Posto, was called Benny's ...
The Vineyards became one of the
longest-standing of the restaurants
created to serve the suburban couples
out on the town in their own neck of
the woods ... It operated on a reputa-
tion for high-quality country French
cuisine for many years ... Add nightly
dancing at the Annex or Benny's to
this and folks had an evening out to
remember ... All this, and a respected
wine list to boot ... Certain to be
crowded on weekends, plans were
made accordingly ... But Vineyards
devotees would tell you it was worth
the effort to get in.

WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY

defines serendipity as "The gift of
finding valuable or agreeable things
not sought after" ... This described the
Wabeek Dining Room on Biddle
Street in Wyandotte ... This described
the unexpected, old-fashioned, com-
fortable, out-of-the-way place and
gentle vibes one soaked in at the
Wabeek ... Everything was fresh, and
cooked in small quantities.
YOU'D HAVE HAD to be the kind
of nut who didn't mind being snowed
on to sit in an open courtyard in the
local climate, so Bennett's Courtyard
on Utica Road in Fraser was thought-
fully covered with a skylight ... Once
you could imagine past the skylight,
you could fancy yourself anywhere on a
line from Southern California directly
east into Arizona ... The courtyard was
done in Spanish tile, the room was
open and airy and the bar stocked with
a wide selection of beers ... The menu
was American, not the Mexican list
you'd find in the Southwest ... The only
south of the border item was its chili ...
