BRIGHT IDEAS

It's not just an airline. It's Israel.

own). Which do you like the best? You
must be cautious, however, as some oils
can burn quickly and are dangerous.
Always check with the manufacturer —
and your parents — before placing in a
menorah.

7. Chanukah candles have a single and
specific purpose: to publicize the miracle
of the holiday. Consequently, Jews are
not supposed to perform menial tasks
(like housework) while the candles are
still burning.
So what can you do while the candles
are burning so bright? Remember
Chanukahs from years ago. Tell a holi-
day story. Learn a new Jewish song.

8. In talmudic times, Jews were directed
to leave their Chanukah menorahs
inside glass cases, so as to prevent harsh
winter winds from blowing our the
flames. Make a tiny menorah of your
own (craft stores have great supplies)
and place in a clear plastic box, to com-
memorate this ancient tradition. Each
year, add something new to your cre-
ation.

9. In Israel, some families like to meet at
Modi'in, where Judah Maccabee lived.
They have a bonfire and light torches to
carry to villages and cities throughout
the country. Try reading about Modi'in
in the Encyclopedia Jzidaica.

10. Many Jewish scholars compare the
theme of Chanukah with that of Purim.
Both are linked to what could have been
the destruction of the Jewish people: At
Chanukah, it would have been our spiri-
tual destruction, while at Purim, we
would have been physically annihilated.
What other ways do you see the two
holidays as similar?

11. The Haftorah read on the Shabbat
of Chanukah ends with the famous
lines, "Not by might, not by power, but
by My Spirit alone, said the Lord."
Ask your children what they think this
means.

12. Because Chanukah occurred, of
course, after the Torah was written, most
of our information about the holiday
comes from the Book of Maccabees.
Josephus, a great chronicler of Jewish
history, also wrote about the holiday, but
he never referred to it as "Chanukai-i,"
calling it instead simply, "Lights." Have
children write their own newspaper
account of what happened on
Chanukah. Or, if they like to draw, tell
the story in comics.
