tinuing Palestinian terrorism against
Israel. European leaders, apparently
careful not to give offense to
Palestinian Authority leader Yasser
Arafat, have too often responded to
terror outrages against Israelis with
solemn calls to 'both parties' to
eschew violence. We call on the
democracies of Europe, as well as
America's friends among moderate
Arab states, to change course and
join the United States in true soli-
darity with democratic Israel — to
not only rhetorically condemn
Palestinian terror against Israelis, but
also apply economic and political
pressure on the Palestinian leader-
ship so that Arafat will finally see
that, in the eyes of the world, he has
no choice, but to act decisively
against terror.
Regrettably, European and Arab
states' acquiescence to terror has sent
the Palestinians a far different and
misguided message, particularly over
the past year — that if they wait
long enough, Israel can be brought
to heel.
With the United States making a
new effort to achieve a cease-fire and
bring about the resumption of
Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations,
Arafat must make a decision. He can
continue to allow the terrorists to
roam freely in territories in Gaza and
the West Bank under his control or
he can arrest and prosecute them,
breaking terror's grip and making a
political solution possible.
The Palestinian leadership cannot
have it both ways — terrorism and
diplomacy.

Don't Brush Aside
Threat Arafat Poses

In the editorials and letters of a recent
issue relating to the cover story
("Getting Into The Fray,'' Nov. 23,
page 14), there was a generally positive
response to Secretary of State Colin
Powell's address of Nov. 19.
Though Powell's speech had some
comforting statements for Israel, he
made several comments that were
quite disturbing. He referred to the

establishment of a "viable Palestinian
state," which can only mean the estab-
lishment of a nation with defined bor-
ders, its own military, its own foreign
policy, its own economy and its own
immigration policies. Though, in the-
ory, that is the right of any nation, it
certainly is not applicable in this case.
Without the end of a hate-ridden,
anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli culture of
violence, the creation of a Palestinian
state would be suicidal for Israel.
Nothing would prevent Palestinian
Authority leader Yasser Arafat from
inviting Iraq or Iran into the new
Palestinian state to support further
"liberation" from the Zionist menace.
Since Oslo and "land for peace," the
Palestinians have received land, but
there has been no corresponding
peace. Using America as a broker will
not ensure a change of heart on the
part of the Palestinians. As long as
Palestinian children are educated to
hate and kill, the Palestinians will
remain a menace.
Israel has demonstrated its willing-
ness to reach for peace. Whatever was
offered was unacceptable. Where,
then, is there a change of heart?
Remember Oslo, lest we forget the
threat that Arafat poses.

Your Coverage
Fair, Evenhanded

While reading last week's issue, espe-
cially the cover story related to the
Kabbalah ("The Kabbalah Flourishes,"
Nov. 30, page 14), I was struck by
what should have been obvious to me
for quite some time, that is, the pro-
fessional journalistic standards main-
tained by your editorial staff
I realized that the Jewish News regu-
larly contains evenhanded, fair cover- •
age of the range of Jewish traditions
with no bias or editorial slant
detectable. There has been extensive
coverage of Humanistic Judaism ... a
subject near and dear to me ... in the
same issues as stories about chasidic
congregation activities, both without
any snide comments or backhanded
references.
I, for one, congratulate you and
your staff on your ability to walk the
fine line of integrity and encourage
you to keep up the good work. The
old metaphor about a rising tide rais-
ing all ships applies here. You are ben-
efiting the Detroit Jewish community.
