Detroit delegates Harlene and Henry
Appelman at the King David Hotel in
Jerusalem.

Also scrubbed were a tour of the Jewish
Quarter of the Old City and a daytime
visit to the Western Wall.
On the journey into Jerusalem from
the airport, the Detroit delegation
made the blessing over wine and said
Shehechiyanu in Emil Bota Park. The
park has a view of the Old City walls,
and is near the King David Hotel,
where the group stayed that first night.
Sugarman's singing on the bus and
the joy of showing solidarity with
Israel made the hectic journey all the
more inspiring.

THE ISSUE

Following last weekend's horrific sui-
cide bombings, Israel's cabinet made a

significant policy change toward the
Palestinians. It designated the
Palestinian Authority as a terror-sup-
porting entity and, for the first time,
the Israel Defense Forces attacked tar-
gets directly identified with Yasser
.Arafat. Observers looked to the U.S.
administration, wondering if President
George Bush would follow suit.

BEHIND THE ISSUE

Drawing closer to coordinating an
anti-terror policy with Israel, White
House Mideast negotiator Gen.
Anthony Zinni put all his meetings
with the Palestinians on hold, and
the Bush administration issued its
strongest ultimatum yet to Yasser
Arafat. While putting a freeze on the
assets of U.S. groups connected to
Hamas, the White House also
demanded that Arafat immediately
dismantle terror organizations, arrest
their activists, destroy their weapons
manufacturing plants and collect ille-
gal weapons.
