roof, ceiling and exterior were vaguely
Tudor ... The thing was the hamburg-
er ... or the smell thereof.
YES, THERE WAS a Chinatown in
downtown Detroit, and Chung's on
Cass at Peterborough was at its heart ...
For many Detroiters, this mainstay of
Cantonese-according-to-Occidental
tastes was probably their first foray into
the world of Chinese food ... Those in
search of the perfect eggroll discovered
that Chung's
0 was said to be one of the
few spots in Detroit that made its own
... shell casing and all ... For the rest,
they didn't come expecting anything .
too exotic ... just paper lanterns, shyly
smiling waiters and waitresses, and con-
sistent Cantonese cuisine.
THE VERY SMALL concrete block
building with recreation room style
paneling housed the West-East Ethnic
Restaurant on N. Perry in Pontiac ... a
sort of cooperative operated by a few
Vietnamese refugees along with 800
shareholders ... Each year, members
and shareholders received rebates and
dividends on their patronage and
investment ... a true restaurant for the
people ... Amid 1940ish Formica
tables and chairs was authentic, home-
cooked Vietnamese food served at very
low prices.
PEOPLE CAME FROM miles
around to enjoy the prime rib and
seafood at Win Schuler's Grate Steak
on Rochester Road in Rochester ...
and on W. Maple in West Bloomfield
(now E.G. Nick's) ... Every meal came
with generous helpings of its
renowned meatballs and cheese as
appetizers ... The setting was formal,
yet comfortable and family-oriented ...
Proper attire was necessary.
FANCY IT WAS NOT ... but good
it certainly was ... Yeman's in
Hamtramck was a real treat with large
portions of stick-to-the-ribs Polish
cooking at small prices ... People took
gourmands among their friends or
family for a fine, inexpensive Polish
feast.
YOU ENTERED Young Kim's
V.I.P. Palace at Town Center in
Southfield through a long, slanted cor-
ridor, which led you past glass cases of
small souvenirs for sale and fine paint-
ings hanging on the wall ... There
were three separate dining areas and a
cocktail lounge ... One dining room
served Mandarin and Korean food ...
another was its Japanese steak house,
where the food was cooked at your
table ... and the sushi bar featured raw
fish delicacies.
