Archibald's on S.
Woodward in
Birmingham was
embarrassed by its
own popularity ...
The lounge, with its
high-backed, deep-cushioned chairs,
was designed for relaxing, but fate had
filled it with gregarious types who had-
n't the time to sit even if there were a
vacant seat ... When the work on the
building (555) was nearly finished,
someone discovered a heap of short six
by sixes that had been trimmed off the
ends of the beams ... They became the
principal decor at Archibald's.
TIME WAS WHEN anyone who
was anyone went downtown to have
dinner in a hotel dining room ... Then
other and better restaurants sprang up
... The trend reversed with fine restau-
rants like the Benchmark in the
Westin International on J.L. Hudson
Drive in Southfield bringing people
back to the hotel for fine dining ... It
was a light and airy place, the menu
bordered on the exotic,.and was not
approached with a skimpy wallet ... Its
companion place, Dewey's, was a
restaurant by day, turned into a lounge
at night ... with better than usual
lounge entertainment.
COMMON BELIEF was that a fine
Italian restaurant served only fine
Italian dishes with oodles of noodles
and Italian wines ... Aldo's on Kelly
Road had all that spaghetti and more
... Plenty of veal, too ... Non-Italian
eaters could find white fish, rainbow
trout, sauteed chicken, chicken soup
with noodles, etc. ... It was owned by
Aldo Ottoviani, corporate chef today
for Joe Vicari at his Andiamo restau-
rants.
THE GIANT STONE idol in front
of Chin's in Livonia enticed you in
and excited your curiosity ... The
decor was scenic and relaxing, with the
thatched room tops and various
Chinese decorations captivating your
interest and immediately putting you
at ease ... The dark interior, soft musi-
cal background and attentive waitress-
es all combined to made you feel
wined, dined and sublime.
UPGRADE AN OLD building into
a Victorian theme eatery, add the
heavenly smell of hamburgers, hash
browns and a steak or two simmering
on the open grill ... That, in essence,
was the Sabre Lancer on East Warren
... The long narrow room, bar on one
side and a row of red booths on the
other, was a flurry of eating, talking
