FRIEDA SUSSKIND, 99, of
Farmington Hills, died Nov. 26.
She is survived by her daughter and
son-in-law, Beatrice and Dr. Jack
Mayer of Farmington Hills; grandchil-
dren, Dr. Robert (Dr. Sherry) Mayer,
Dr. Arlene (Kenneth) Gold; great-
grandchildren, Aimee, Rachel, Elana,
Jodie and Julia. She was the beloved
wife of the late Jack Susskind.

DR. ALFRED SUSSMAN, 82, of
Ann Arbor, died Nov. 19. He received
his bachelor of science degree from the
University of Connecticut. He then
attended Harvard University, gaining
his master of arts degree in botany and
a doctorate. He was a teaching fellow
at Harvard and instructor in micro-
biology at Massachusetts General
Hospital. In 1949, he was an Atkins
Fellow at Atkins Botanical Gardens in
Soledad, Cuba.
During World War II, Professor
Sussman served in the Medical Corps,
rising from private to captain.
In the 1950, he served as a research
biologist in the Michigan Memorial
Phoenix Project and later became a vis-
iting scientist at Brookhaven National
Laboratory in Long Island and a Lalor
Foundation Fellow. He was promoted
to assistant professor of botany in 1953
and associate professor in 1958. Prior
to retirement in 1990, he was the dean
emeritus at Rackham School of
Graduate Studies-University of
Michigan.
Professor Sussman's memberships
included the American Chemical
Society; American Association for the
Advancement of Science, Botanical
Society of America, Mycological
Society of America, Society for Study
of Growth and Development,
American Society for Plant
Physiologists and the Society of
American Bacteriologists.
Professor Sussman was the author of
rwo books and had written numerous
technical articles. His research on the
mold Neuospora gained national atten-;
tion and contributed greatly to the
study of cell metabolism. In 1985, a
symposium fund was established in his
honor at the University of Michigan.
Professor Sussman is survived by his
wife, Eleanor Feller Sussman; daughter
and son-in-law, Jean Sussman and Ed
Lyons of Illinois; sons and daughters-
in-law, Paul Sussman and Linda Dallin
of San Francisco, Harold and
Shekoofeh Sussman of New York;
grandchildren, Maya and Leo
Sussman, Sabrina and Cyrus Sussman;
sister, Evelyn Feit of New Jersey;
brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law,
Stanley and Joyce Feinman, Beatrice
and Harry Kirsch and Rosalyn and
Morty Rudin; stepchildren, David
Feller, Susan Feller and Leslie Arlen. H(
was the beloved husband of the late
Selma Sussman.
