Shopping channel spokespersons, those enviable men and women who always are perfectly coifed and whose teeth are never less than gleaming white, often advise that if we are to buy "just one" [fill in the blank] this year, let it be "this one" [add: what- ever it is they are selling]. If you are buying "just one" Chanukah book this year, let it be Chanukah Lights Everywhere. What is it that works in this book that fails in most? First of all, the illustrations are great. They're fresh and cozy and they really perfectly reflect the text. Or how about that girl who just laughed when you invited her to the prom? Well, here's your chance to pay them back. Give them a copy of Hanukkah Cat and you will have made them suffer tenfold-. The book is that bad. Hanukkah Cat is the story of a cat that suddenly appears on a boy's doorstep on, you guessed it, Chanukah. The boy, Lenny, wants to keep the cat, but his mother has no interest. Meanwhile, the cat gets into all kind of trouble — including killing a bird and bringing it to the door, which results in Lenny's mom beating the cat with a broom. Is this really stuff we want children to read? In the end, Hanukkah Cat gets to stay because he saves Lenny from a fierce dog. Wow. How original. Lenny may be happy, but the rest of us will have had to endure 32 pages of a dreadfully written and illustrated book that we can't recommend. ❑ * Professional instructions * Classes for all skill levels - beginner to expert * Special program for the younger skiers (ages 6-10) * Small classes * Adult classes too! * Charter buses Saturday & Sunday 40- winter walden (248) 855-1075 Teaching Kids to Ski is Our Business W ski club Celebrating our 27th season! * * * * Exceptional Living in West Bloomfield ChimN[y Hill • Private Entrances • Outdoor Pool • Fireplaces Luxury 2 Bedroom Apartments from $1145/mo! • Attached Garages • Fully Furnished Apts.
