dren will love. And this book has a
great added bonus: Much of it glows
in the dark. Just hold the pages up to
a light; then take into the dark to see
an outlined picture. Okay, so it was
written for young children; this is a
lot of fun for grown-ups, too!

Rainbow Candles by Myrna Shostak,
with illustrations by Sally Spring.
Published by Kar-Ben Copies, copy-
right 1986 (text) and 2001 (illustra-
tions). 12 pages. $4.95.
A little girl lights a different colored
candle for each night of Chanukah.
Along the way, we read very forced,
inane rhymes like, "Rainbow candles, I
see SEVEN. Golden flames leap up to
heaven."
You don't need this in your life.
If you're looking for a book for the
smallest children, opt for Chanukah
Lights instead.

HALL
tr> MELANIE,
No doubt you've heard the adage, "You
can't judge a book by its cover."
In the case of On Hanukkah, not
only can you not judge this book by its
cover, you can't judge it by any of its
pages. They're all beautiful because the
art is wonderful. Melanie Hall is a fab-
ulous artist; her works are warm and
engaging; and if you see these and
nothing else, you'll understandably be
tempted to buy this book.
Don't.
Certainly On Hanukkah starts out
all right, but toward the middle some-
thing goes very wrong. First Ms.
Fishman starts in with the giving of
Chanukah presents, which is merely an
imit tion of Christmas; gift-giving has
nothing to do with Chanukah.
Then her text positively reeks with
a

sentimentality, making a flowery greet-
ing card look tame by comparison.
Here's a sample: 'As we stand together
on this last night, I think each of us
looks like a shining candle in the
menorah of our family. I think of each
family lighting Hanukkah candles
tonight as a shining candle in the
menorah of the Jewish religion.
"And I know the great menorah in
the Holy Temple didn't burn for just
eight days. It has burned in our hearts
for over 2,000 years, and that is the
real miracle of Hanukkah."
Ouch. That's downright painful.
