While many photo processing stores print out photo-quality pic- tures, Tom Nathan of Nathan's Camera in Royal Oak recommends that people with digital cameras get a scanner to transfer old negatives, slides and pictures, which they can then store on their computers. "Decent film scanners are now avail- able for $600 or so, and flatbed scanners are very reasonable," he says. "It allows you to take your old stuff, and make it usable in your computer. There are programs that allow you to create a photo library." Jim Rose concurs. "The files can be easily compressed, so they take up very little room in your computer. I proba- bly have hundreds of photos in my hard drive," he says. With a CD burn- er, it is then easy to burn a CD of these photo images and share them with family and friends. Rose also has used his digital cam- era for documenting things, such as cataloging artwork and other items in his home for insurance purposes. "It's just easier to have the storage on a disc," he says. Most photography experts do not believe that digital will ever fully replace 35mm film photography. "If you are on a budget, you are better off with a 35mm camera," says Dworkin of Century Camera. "The quality is just not as good on a $200 digital cam- era as it is on a $200 35mm camera." To achieve a high-caliber digital photo, experts agree you will need to spend at least $500, and most likely over $800. "If you spend $900 or more, you are pretty close in quality to a 35mm camera," says Dworkin. If you are ready to invest in a digi- tal camera, major camera makers such as Olympus, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta and Fuji all have a variety of models to make the art of photography as simple as "enter and send."
