text in II Maccabees praises the moth-
er for her sacrifice: "She deserves to be
held in glorious memory, for she
looked on as her seven sons perished
in the course of a single day and bore
it bravely because of her hopes in the
Lord. Each one of them in turn she
exhorted in the language of their fore-
fathers..." (7:20-21, 23). The mother,
popularly known as Hannah, reminds
us of the grave responsibility we have
as parents, as well as teachers and
other role models for children: How
do we choose what is worth fighting
for, worth putting our kids at risk for,

lights remind us
that, if we truly act

God's will, God will
back us up in our
endeavors.

This story challenges us to teach our
children to stand for a cause, even
when it is inconvenient, even danger-
ous. Re-reading the text for the past
year with the new lens of a mother, I
realize that we, like the mother in II
Maccabees, make many personal
choices that may negatively affect our
children — that when we take a stand,

we are devoted to ideals, to causes, to
mitzvot, we must be willing, like
Hannah, to teach our children that
these are more important than indi-
vidual preferences and desires; that liv-
ing our lives according to God's will
must be second to nothing.
When we celebrate the yearly cycle
of Shabbat and holidays, we make a
statement to our children about the
importance of service to God, even if
it makes us run on a different clock
than the majority of Americans. When
we choose to make aliyah to Israel, we
