Arab TV Satire
Lambasts Sharon

Tel Aviv/JTA — Abu Dhabi TV said
a satire depicting a bloodthirsty
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
would continue to air. Officials with
the satellite television station said
Tuesday they had no intention of
bowing to international criticism of
the show, in which Sharon is depict-
ed as a terrorist who drinks Arab
blood.
.‘ The series was launched last Friday
of the start of the Islamic holy
Month of Ramadan. Israeli Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres has called the
show "repulsive" and said he plans to
file a complaint with the United
Nations. E.U. officials also
denounced the segment as scan-
dalous; several Western companies
pulled advertisements.

Germany Fights
Anti-Semitism

Bonn/JTA — Anti-Semitic attacks are
becoming "virulent" again in
Germany.
"Right-wing extremism now seems
to have taken on a new quality.
Things that used to happen only in
secret are now happening in open
daylight. Publicly, shamelessly,
provocatively," said Paul Spiegel, Jews
of the Central Council of ews
in Germany.
Spiegel made the remarks Tuesday
during an address to the annual con-
ference of Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder's Social Democratic Party.
"Memorials and Jewish cemeteries are
being defaced, incendiary devices
hurled at synagogues and foreigners'
homes, and foreigners are being hunt-
ed. These are sadly not isolated cases
any more."

London/JTA — Amnesty
International accused Israel of
increasingly using torture against
Palestinian suspects. In a report
Tuesday to the United Nations
Committee Against Torture, the
London-based human rights group
cited "strong evidence" that Israeli
security forces were using illegal
methods, including painful handcuff-

ing and sleep deprivation.
The report was issued as the U.N.
committee began examining Israel's
record at its semiannual meeting in
Geneva. Israeli ambassador Ya'akov
Levy defended his country's record,
saying moderate force was used "in
isolated cases." Levy said Israel is try-
ing to strike a balance between pro-
tecting the rights of detainees and cit-
izens, who are targeted by "indiscrim-
inate terrorist attacks."

Israeli Tourism
Declines Steeply

Tel Aviv/JTA — Tourist arrivals in
Israel fell in October to their lowest
monthly level since August 1991.
According to figures released
Tuesday by the Central Bureau of
Statistics, 69,800 visitors came to
Israel in October, compared to
151,300 a year earlier, just after the
start of the Palestinian uprising.
The average monthly number of
tourists during the first 10 months of
this year was 94,000, nearly half the
monthly average of 186,000 arrivals
during -the first nine months of 2000,
before Palestinian violence began, the
statistics bureau said.

Israel Blocks
Suicide Bombs

Tel Aviv/JTA — Israel claimed it
thwarted 16 Palestinian terrorist
attacks during the past month. Army
Radio reported that Israeli forces killed
20 terrorists and their accomplices in
the last month.
Israeli officials said the terrorists
intended to carry out eight suicide
bombings, as well as shooting
attacks and roadside bombings in
the West Bank. The government
plans to use the claims in a global
publicity campaign to garner sup-
port for Israel.

Lady of the Angels is dedicated in
September 2002, the Archdiocese of
Los Angeles announced. The grant,
given through a foundation established
by the anonymous donor, recognizes
"the longtime cordial and constructive
relationship between the Jewish com-
munity and the Roman Catholic com-
munity here in Southern California,"
the statement from the archdiocese said.

Israeli hiker was found in China.

Rosenbluh drowned two weeks ago
when he attempted to cross a fast-

OU: Celebrate With
Emergency Workers

New York/JTA — The Orthodox
Union suggests using Thanksgiving as
a time to celebrate with local emer-
gency workers. The group is calling on
its member synagogues nationwide to
host local firefighters, police officers
and paramedics in their respective
communities in different ways.
Suggestions include arranging for a
festive meal to be delivered to a local
fire station or police precinct on
Thanksgiving Day, giving a significant
contribution to one of the local emer-
gency services, or inviting police or
firefighters to a Shabbat service.
The executive vice president of the
Rabbinical Council of America
explained that hakarat hatov, recog-
nition of a good deed, is a basic
tenet of Judaism.
"Their actions must be repaid with
an openhandedness of our own,"
said Rabbi Steven Dworken.
