The War We Face
Will Never Stop

Synagogue Coverage
Receives Thanks

I certainly agree with the conclusions
of last week's editorial ("Where's The
Foresight?", Nov. 9, page 35) — nei-
ther Israel nor the United States seems
to have a clear idea of where they are
going with war.
The reason is quite simple. Neither
country has truly embraced the fact
that the war against Islam or
"Islamists," the term David Pipes has
euphemistically coined, will never
stop. They are not conducting their, in
fact, mutual war accordingly.
The Americans have yet to identify
these two wars as exactly the same.
The Arabs will never stop trying to get
rid of Israel, and Islam will never stop
attempting to regain its supremacy
over the West and regain its world
dominance of the seventh to the 12th
century.
Their mosques have not, in 1,300
years, stopped preaching the superiori-
ty of their religion and the inferiority
of any competing ideology.
Nevertheless, still lingering among
many Israelis and Americans is the
vague hopethat the Arabs of the
Middle East will finally realize how
Israel and the United States can truly
help them.
Perhaps in some millennium this
will happen. Perhaps the "Islamists"
and Arabs of the world will eventually
see the light, stop their hatred of Israel
and embrace Western concepts of free-
dom and democracy and even relative-
ly unfettered capitalism.
But I would not hold my breath and
certainly not base United States or
Israeli foreign policy on such vain
hopes. It is far too dangerous to our
own survival to go around in such a
bubble. Israeli Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres, and the awful repercus-
sions to Israel of his Oslo process, have
proven that to all but the most irra-
tional liberal. And, inexplicably, there
are still many of those around.

On behalf of the membership and
board of directors of the Isaac Agree
Downtown
Synagogue, I
would like to
extend our
warmest apprecia-
tion for your
recent coverage of
our synagogue's
estate sale and
goodbye dinner
for Rabbi Noah
Gamze.
We are especial-
Rabbi Gamze
ly grateful to Staff
Writer Shelli
Liebman Dorfman for her initial
article and to Staff Writer Sharon
Luckerman for the glowing article
she wrote about the estate sale and
our needs ("Hope Amid Hardships,"
Aug. 31, page 51).
We continue to maintain our com-
mitment to a Jewish presence in the
city of Detroit and feel gratified
when we experience support from
the Jewish community. We are con-
sidering some major changes in
hopes of attracting greater member-
ship and will keep you informed,
hopefully as a means of keeping
open communication with the
Jewish community at large.

SourceBook Proves
A Valuable Help

We recently received the newest ver-
sion of the JN SourceBook (2001-
2002/5762 edition), which remind-
ed me of just how useful this publi-
cation has been, and is, to us.
When my dad was beginning to
fail and then up until his death, this
book was a great source of informa-
tion for adult day care programs, for
finding assistance for his care and,
ultimately, for hospice. Having a
place to go to find people to contact
made it easier to find what was
needed.
Thank you for this terrific book.
