the international relief organization that
he plans to continue withholding annual

"I think there's an increasing senti-
ment" that Magen David Adorn
"should be admitted. Many of the
European countries are coming to that
view, though not all of them," he said.

Blair Defends
Israel Statehood

London/JTA — Tony Blair said the
Arab world must be ready to clearly
recognize Israel's right to exist.
In a speech Monday night, the British
prime minister said such recognition is
one of two "fixed principles" for ending
Israeli-Palestinian violence and reaching
a final peace accord. The other is the
creation of a "viable" Palestinian state.

Israel Amid
A Recession

Tel Aviv/JTA — Israel is officially in a
state of economic recession.
The Central Bureau of Statistics said
Wednesday that the nation's gross
domestic product dropped 2.8 percent in
the third quarter of 2001, following a 1
percent drop during the second quarter.

13,000 To Go
On Birthright

Washington/JTA — Some 13,000
young people are registered to go on
free 10-day trips to Israel this winter.
Of the number expected on the trip,
sponsored by Birthright Israel, 8,000
are from the United States.
The program, which will include
Jews from Hungary and Paraguay for
the first time, works with young Jews
from 17 countries. Birthright has sent
22,702 people to Israel since the pro-
gram began.
Alumni of free 10-day trips to Israel
continue to feel stronger attachments
to Israel and the Jewish people than
they did before the trip.
The finding was part of a new study
conducted by Brandeis University's Cohen
Center for Modern Jewish Studies.
The study reports that 65 percent of
Birthright Israel alumni feel a strong
connection to the Jewish people one
year after the trip — compared with
38 percent beforehand — and that 48
percent feel a strong connection to
Israel, compared with 22 percent
beforehand.
