ming pool and InLine skating center
in the West Bloomfield JCC, closed
on Labor Day. It was determined there
would not be enough business once
the outdoor pool closed for the season.
The InLine Grill had replaced food
service typically provided only in the
summers.
"We had hoped to be able to
expand that, being able to stay open
all year," Sorkin says. "But that wasn't
possible."
Both venues lost money, says
Cohen. Beginning Sept. 1, he has
been concentrating his time working
alongside Alan Linker, owner of
Sperber's Kosher Catering. Cohen will
take over Sperber's following Linker's
move to Florida in December.
Since all JCC food service venues
are run under operational contracts,
equipment and space in both restau-
rants are owned by the JCC and can
be reopened as soon as a vendor is
found.

Milk And Honey

One immediate glimmer of hope for
food service is the anticipated March
2002 opening of the Milk and Honey
Restaurant, to be run by Matt
Prentice, president of the Bingham
Farms-based Unique Restaurant
Corporation.
"After working with the West
Bloomfield municipality as well as the
state, all the T's are crossed and the I's
are dotted, and Milk and Honey is
now under contruction," Sorkin says.
Prentice, who has been catering par-
ties in the West Bloomfield JCC's
David and Marion Handleman Hall
and Auditorium since March of 2000,
will oversee the 50-seat Milk and
Honey that can be expanded to
accommodate 100 patrons.
The restaurant, being constructed in
the area that once housed Elijah's Cup
coffee shop and the JCC library, will
have its own kitchen, separate from
the banquet kitchen used for
Handleman Hall events.
A liquor license has been obtained
for the full-service dairy restaurant,
which will serve breakfast, lunch and
dinner and provide carryout and bak-
ery items, all under Vaad supervision.
There will also be a dining/meeting
room available.
"We will later determine if we need
to provide a meat option," Sorkin
says. "In the banquet hall, we have
had virtually no requests, but if we
have them, we will look for someone
to handle meat operations." ❑
