So quickly, in fact, that in no time
the children had collected $25, $50,
$100 and now — more than $700.
Their goal is to raise $1,000, which
they will then donate to the New York
State World Trade Center Relief Fund.
Ruthie, a fourth-grader who enjoys
"playing with friends and on the com-
puter," and likes spelling and art best
in school, has a lot of patience for
making pins. She'll turn on the radio
or TV, she says, and just get going.
"Last Sunday we were making them all
day"
After Sukkot vacation, Davidi and
Ruthie had a change in their sales
strategy. They returned to school,
where the pins proved so popular that
they have sold them strictly to teachers
and their classmates. While $5 might
seem a lot to the school set, Davidi, a
6th-grader whose hobbies include
swimming and drawing, offers this
approach: "It's not that you're really
buying something for $5. It's that
you're donating $5 to a good cause
and you get a pin for a prize." ❑
