ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM AppleTree Editor erhaps you wish sweet dreams to your sweet ones with a bouquet of kisses. Or maybe you tuck them in at night and snuggle together. Or maybe you sing them a lullaby, like Abraham Goldfaden's Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen (Raisins and Almonds), the story of a Jewish widow who sits "in a corner of the Holy Temple ... rocking her only son, Yidele, to sleep." Or maybe you're just saying, "Could you please go to bed?" as your child asks for another drink, another story, another something to eat, and "Will you lie with me?" and then announces: "I'm not tired." Bedtime for parents of young children can be both a lovely and a challenging time. Now, the Jewish Family Education Project of Metropolitan Detroit wants to give families the tools they need to make their bedtime rituals — whether it's a story or a song or another snack — Jewish. From to 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield, the Family Education Project will kick off its first venture, "Shhhhma and Sweet Dreams." The free program, which is open to the commu- nity, will help Jewish families learn new ways to incorporate Judaism and Jewish tradition into their bedtime routines. Jewish Family Education is supervised by Jewish Experiences for Families (JEFF), and is one of the initiative of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Alliance for Jewish Education. "It's really simple to make bedtime a Jewish time," said Lisa Soble Siegmann, who is JEFF/Jewish Family Education project director. "You can say the Shema, and V'ahavta. Or, if you're going to sing your children a song, sing them a Jewish song. ii "Our goal is to provide you with the tools that enable a family to enrich the rituals of bedtime." The program, which is especially geared to families with children ages 7 and younger, will host different stations. At one, children will be able to create their own "Shema pillowcase" while par- ents discuss various bedtime rituals. Another will feature music for bedtime, along with breathing and relaxation techniques for parents and children. A third station will focus on Jewish stories, which will be for sale at the JCC's Jewish Book Fair Nov. 8-18. This station will also feature a healthful bedtime snack and My Bedtime Shema Activity Book, into which families can insert a child's picture. At the event, families will be able to place their order for a new compact disc featuring the talents of local cantors and cantorial soloists Chaim Najman of ShaPrey Zedek; Samuel Greenbaum of Beth Shalom; Earl Berris of B'nai Moshe; Lori Corrsin of Temple Israel; Penny Steyer of Shir Shalom; and Lisa Soble Siegmann of Shir Tikvah. The CD, to be released this December, marks the first such joint effort by local cantors and cantorial soloists. Soble Siegmann, who coordinated the program, gives special thanks for fund- ing to "Mandell and Madeleine Berman, and their never-ending support for fami- ly education." The "Shhhma and Sweet Dreams" event includes contributions of eight family educators, representing "a part- nership between congregations and local agencies and Federation's Alliance for Jewish Education," Soble Siegmann said. Each family educator works with a different local synagogue. Their sole responsibility and priority is Jewish fam- ily education, with the majority focus being early childhood education." ❑ Saturday, November 10, 2001 9 a.m.-4 p.m. F R EE Enjoy refreshments in the yoga classes warmth of our new Farmington Hills yoga studio.
