mer 2001 trip to Israel,
co-sponsored by
Birthright Israel and the
Ann Arbor Chabad House, is that its
success warrants repeating.
"It was such an amazing experience
we're going to do it again in
December," says Rabbi Alter
Goldstein, who, with his wife
Chanchi led the trip for 40
University of Michigan students. Co-
founded by philanthropists Michael
H. Steinhardt and Charles Bronfman
as a way of building Jewish identity,
Birthright Israel offers free, 10-day
trips for college-aged Jews who have
never been to Israel.
"The group was really able to relate
to Alter and Chanchi as peers," says
participant Bobby Nooromid of
Atlanta. "I was able to travel to Israel
and ask all the questions that were
running through my mind. I was ask-
ing not only mentors, but friends
who were able to guide me through
the Holy Land."
