dinner, which also featured the dedi-
cation of the beit midrash (study
hall) of Yagdil Torah in honor of Mr.
and Mrs. Moshe Yosef Flatt of Oak
Park. The Flatts, Holocaust sur-
vivors, are generous supporters of
Yagdil Torah and many "other Torah
institutions.
"They saw someone try to put the
flame of Yiddishkeit out, and are
intent on making sure it stays burn-
ing," said Rabbi Eli Yelen, rabbi of
the congregation.
Rabbi Yelen began the Orthodox
synagogue nearly three years ago in
response to neighborhood need for a
close minyan. The congregation cur-
rently meets in rented office space
on 10 Mile Road, holding services
daily as well as on Shabbat and holi-
days. The Kollel Dirshu is the pride
of the shul. For information or to
join Kollel Dirshu, call Rabbi Eli
Yelen (248) 968-2728, or Yaakov
Gregg (248) 967-3098.
Mornings at Yagdil Torah see 35 to
40 dedicated laymen meeting before
Shacharit (morning service) to learn
Talmud as members of the chavurah.
The daily page is taught by Rabbi
Yelen in an intense, one-hour study
period to most of the participants,
while others learn in pairs. Tests are
given weekly to review material cov-
ered, with a small financial incentive
($35) awarded to those who pass.
Shacharit and breakfast follow the
study session.
The early morning chavurah pro-
gram is spreading, with Kollel
Dirshu groups now also meeting in
Montreal, Toronto, Chicago and sev-
eral cities in Israel. The program
enables people to fit a regular session
of Torah study into their busy sched-
ules.
"It adds a different dimension to
your day," says chavurah member
Yaakov Gregg of Oak Park, owner of
Jacob's Ladder heating and cooling
service. "Before I go to work at 8
a.m., I've already learned, davened
and had breakfast. The day is richer
than it's ever been."
Southfield attorney Brian Hershfus
finds the Kollel Dirshu program
"inspiring" and appreciates that his
morning learning schedule doesn't
cut into his family time or conflict
with evening activities.
"It starts the day right," he says. El
