As a board member of the
Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the
American Red Cross, I am concerned
about inaccurate information in the
media and wish to set the record
straight ("To Mat For Israel," Nov. 2,
JN Online).
Money that has been donated to the
Red Cross Liberty Fund is being used
to meet the needs of people affected
by the Sept. 11 attacks. More than
2,400 families, which lost breadwin-
ners, have received direct monetary
assistance.
In total, more than 25,000 families
have received Red Cross assistance
because they lost a loved one, lost
their home or jobs, or were evacuated.
The disaster relief is completely free
and made possible by the generous
contributions of the American public.
The Red Cross has also used donat-
ed dollars to feed rescue workers and
comfort people, including children,
who are suffering emotionally in the
aftermath of the attacks. We are also
helping the victims of the anthrax
attacks.
No one knows what needs the vic-
tims of these terrible attacks might
have in months and years to come.
No one can say what terrorist attacks
may occur in the future. I can defi-
nitely say that, no matter what, the
American Red Cross will be there to
help.
I know first hand that the Red
Cross is an honest organization with a
well-deserved reputation for integrity
and humanitarianism.
I would also like to note that the
Red Cross Board of Governors reaf-
firmed its policy of withholding dues
from the International Red Cross on
Oct. 27 in protest to the exclusion of
Mogen David Adom (MDA).
I do know that the American Red
Cross deserves our continued trust
and support.

New Dangers
Face Free World
I was surfing television channels the
other evening looking for news and
stumbled on C-Span. The New Black
Panther Party in Washington., D.C.,
had that channel for the entire
evening (related commentary: Editor's
Notebook, "Vigilance Over Fear,"
page 5).
I watched in amazement as each
member took the podium and pro-
ceeded to tear down our country, our
government and our people. Some
were even delighted over the World
Trade Center destruction in New York
City, with no concern over all the
innocent lives lost in that senseless
attack. The entire evening was laced
with prejudices and hatred as each
member took a turn at speaking.
I have never been insensitive to
injustices to any group of people and
I have always kept an open mind as to
ways of helping those in need, regard-
less of their ethnic background or reli-
gious beliefs. It was especially painful
for me because I love the United
States and all it stands for.
I have learned of a new threat
against the free world: unbridled
hate, unreasonable train of thought
and disregard of all those nations
and their people who appear to be
different and think differently, or
practice a different religion than the
New Black Panther Party, which pro-
fesses to practice the Islamic faith,
but does not.
I am surprised that our government
allows that type of irresponsible non-
sense to go on here in the "land of the
free and the home of the brave."

Rabbi Polter
Earns Plaudits
Not long ago, I read in the Jewish
News a short article written by Rabbi
David S. Polter ("A Cherished
Memory," Oct. 12, page 41).
I was excited to read it and wish he
would write more often. He is a great
writer.
