include nearly 10 models of each gun,
but now it's almost impossible to get
one, said Ray, who prefers using only
his first name.
Gary Krochmal of Farmington Hills
spent part of a recent Saturday after-
noon on the Target Sports shooting
range, taking the National Rifle
Association Personal Protection In The
Home course for people who want a
concealed weapons permit in Michigan.
He doesn't own a gun, but says he's
thinking about it.
As an intern with the prosecutor's
office 30 years ago, Krochmal was in
an office above the Pontiac Police
Department firing range. He said he
used to shoot once a week with the
drill instructors.
Though he's not doing anything differ-
ently after the Sept. 11 tragedy, he says
he is more aware of his surroundings.
Simon Richards of Wixom teaches
the eight-hour required class to allow a
Michigan resident to carry a concealed
firearm. Demand is so high, he's
added classes during the week.
Michigan Attorney General Jennifer
Granholm said people have the
Second Amendment right to protect
themselves and own firearms, but they
shouldn't panic.
"The problem is that in Michigan,
we have not seen any reason to believe
that we are any more susceptible to a
terrorist attack than anywhere else," she
said. "We don't have any of the major
national icons of significance like the
Pentagon or the White House."
Ray said people want peace of mind,
and feel they must have a firearm for
personal protection.
"I've had people who have never
ever owned a firearm in their lives
come in the store," he said. "The peo-
ple from the Birminghams, the West
Bloomfields and the Farmington Hills.
These guys are anti-gun, or if you
want, call them liberals. They've never
owned a gun before.
"They talked it over with their fami-
ly and thought it's time to get some-
thing for home defense, or something
to carry to protect themselves."
Ray and Granholm may be on oppo-
site sides of the gun issue, but they agree
our safety and security has been com-
prised. Awareness and caution, at what-
ever level, has permeated the American
consciousness from now on.
