Poll: U.S. Jews
Closer To Israel

Support Of Israel
Didn't Provoke Attacks

New York/JTA — A new survey indi-
cated that American Jews feel a
stronger attachment to Israel than they
did before Sept. 11.
The survey of 606 U.S. Jewish
adults conducted by the Forward
newspaper also showed that almost
half say they are "more in touch" with
their Jewish identity since the terror
attacks on the United States.
The survey, which had a 6 percent
margin of error, found that American
Jews are evenly divided over whether to
support the Bush administration's
"effort to include Arab states" in its
anti-terrorism coalition. They are equal-
ly divided over whether Israel "should
heed the president's calls for restraint
regarding Palestinian terrorism."
However, nearly two-thirds of the
respondents agreed that "American
Jewish organizations were right to crit-
icize the Bush administration for
pressing Israel to exercise restraint in
responding to Palestinian terrorism."
The proportion of American Jews who
believe Israel should be "less concilia-
tory" toward the Palestinians has
dropped from 34 percent in January
to 21 percent this week. In addition,
44 percent agreed that the Sept. 11
attacks resulted in part from
"America's support for Israel."

Washington/JTA — Most Americans do
not believe the U.S.-Israel relationship
provoked the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
According to a survey released Friday
by the Anti-Defamation League, 63 per-
cent of Americans say the United States'
close relationship with Israel had noth-
ing to do with the attacks on New York
and Washington, while 22 percent think
there was a connection.
Forty-three percent of Americans say
it is hypocritical for the United States
to criticize Israel's policy of assassinat-
ing Palestinian leaders.

Haggadah Theme:

Thanksgiving

New York/JTA — A U.S. Jewish
group is distributing a Thanksgiving

Haggadah.
The American Jewish Committee's
leaflet, which comes in response to the
Sept. 11 terror attacks, asks partici-
pants at the traditional autumn meal
to light a candle of hope and a
memorial candle for the victims.
The booklet contains inspirational
words from the Bible, rabbis and poets
echoing the traditional Passover themes
of freedom. It includes an activity to
involve children in the discussion and
asks people to consider, Why is this
Thanksgiving different? What have we
lost? What have we learned? What do
we tell our children? The publication is
available at wvvw.ajc.org

Film Explores
Jewish Mothers

Jerusalem/JTA — The Jewish mother
stereotype is relatively new to the
movies.
An Australian documentary that
looks at the way Jewish mothers have
been represented in film over the years
finds that the "stereotypical" Jewish
mother defined as emasculating and
overbearing was mainly featured in
films made in the 1970s and 1980s.
Director Monique Schwarz shows in
her film Mamadrama that older films
depict mothers as strong, lovable char-
acters at the moral center of families.
One historian in the film, which
was released in October, suggests that
the Jewish-mother stereotype of more
recent times is a fantasy figure of male
writers and directors.
