... At Gallery, they are always either
fresh or cleaned regularly ... No wonder
people are lined out the door to get in.
The same excellent soup that
Gallery has become noted for ... tasty
and well-bodied mushroom barley that
has always been on the Gallery menu
since the W. 10 Mile days ... and the
chicken noodle soup, chock full of
vegetables and chunks of chicken that
is made once a week.
The Gallery goes through over 100
pounds of whitefish a week ... And is
quite proud of its home cooking, like
the salmon patties, chicken pot pie
and corned beef hash ... People come
from many areas just for them.
The gals love Gallery's salads at
lunchtime ... Julienne, Cobb, Greek, etc.
It is open seven days a week ...
Monday-Saturday, 7 to 9:30 p.m. ...
Sunday, 8 to 9 p.m.
Stephen has been serving Jewish cus-
tomers since 1974, when he opened the
first Gallery on W. 10 Mile Road ... He
had come to the United States from
Greece's Peloponnesos peninsula in
1961 ... and was with Beshara Coffee
until going into the restaurant business.
His doing business with Jewish peo-
ple so long has continually increased
his Yiddish vocabulary.
The first Hebrew word Stefan
learned was shalom ... Now he has a
Yiddish expression for everyone ... and
many folks have one for him ... The
one he likes the best is when people
call him a mensch ... He knows what
that means.
Stefan's customers from W. 10 Mile
Road continue to come to his Gallery
on Telegraph ... Their children and
grandchildren, too.
The good, wholesome food with its
wide variety ... fine, gracious service ...
inexpensive prices ... and cleanliness
that is second to none ... is reason for
much high regard.
THE RASCAL HOUSE deli-
catessen, coming to West Bloomfield,
is affiliated with the original ... The
Collins Avenue restaurant in Miami
Beach, Fla., is among the best known
of all America's delis ... with excellent
Jewish traditional dishes and unbeliev-
able breads and pastries.
SEEING SIGNS ... on the counter
at Baggitt in Applegate Square,
Southfield ... "In God we trust. All
others must pay cash."
GIGI'S KORNER ... "The no-no of
all mistakes for us girls was made last
week in my first column. It made me
older than I am. I'm 15 weeks old, not
15 months."
