lack hats and suits, knit
kippot (skullcaps) and

ples and great-grandpar-
ents filled the Yeshivas Darchei
Torah auditorium Saturday night,
Oct. 27, for a Cafe Night melavah
malkah (post-Shabbat gathering)
sponsored by P'TACH.
Proceeds from the evening benefit
P'TACH (open in Hebrew), an
acronym for Parents for Torah for
All Children. The international
organization provides special tutor-
ing for yeshiva students with learn-
ing disabilities. The Detroit chapter,
founded in 1979, serves 30-40 stu-
dents annually, with resource rooms
at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah and its Beth
Jacob School for Girls, Yeshivas
Darchei Torah, and Yeshivat Akiva,
all based in Southfield.
The evening featured a dessert

buffet and musical entertainment by
Shoresh, a Hebrew singing duo from
New York. Candlelight provided the
ambience for more than 300 mem-
bers of metro Detroit's Orthodox
community.
"It's nice to have social events that
attract people from different schools
and shuls. We need more programs
like this," said Sheryl Zimberg of
Southfield.
"The music is beautiful, and the
community connectedness feels so
good. It's an uplifting evening," said
Oak Park resident Susie Rosenfeld.
"It's low key and comfortable,"
said Southfielder Dr. Phil
Goldmeier. "You can just listen and
enjoy. It's nice to see the community
turn out for a good cause."
P'TACH tutoring is offered for
both secular and religious subjects.
Parents pay for tutoring over and
above regular yeshiva tuition.
"About 10-15 percent of the gen-
eral population is learning disabled,"
