place in the Israeli Chasidic Song
Festival the year that it was presented.
The words for the melody come from
a line in the Amidah (silent prayer) for
Mussaf(additional morning service)
that is chanted on the pilgrimage holi-
days. This exhilarating melody is now
a standard for many synagogues
around the world and is, it seems to
me, approaching Misinai status.
Cantor Fuchs served in the
Haganah and later in the Israeli army.
His musical composition of a line in
Psalm 3, Lo ira meriv'vot ahm asher
saviv shatu alai kuma Hashem,
Hosheini Elohai (I will not fear the
multitudes of the nations who rise
against me, Rise up, 0 God, and
deliver me)" is sung in "rounds."
This song did much to boost the
morale of many Israelis during the
very trying times of the formative
years of the state. Its message would
seem most appropriate today, consid-
ering the recent attacks on the U.S.
and the ongoing intifada (Palestinian
uprising) in Israel, which are aimed at
destroying our equanimity.

A Rich Baritone

Cantor Fuchs had a rich baritone
voice with which he led synagogue
choirs in Tel Aviv and later in
Detroit. In both venues, he worked
together with Cantor Shabtai
Ackerman. In addition to their work
in the synagogue, they presented
concerts that were often carried on
Radio Kol Yisroel. Both in Israel and
Detroit, Cantor Fuchs directed
women's choirs that brought comfort
and joy to many that benefited from
their community performances.
The melodies kneh Vetcha and Lo
Ira are two examples of the 221 orig-
inal compositions contained in
T' clot UzMirot Yisrael. There is a tal-
mudic concept B'Shem Omro which
my daughter, Rabbi Sheryl Katzman,
shared with me. Basically, the idea is
that it is meritorious to give credit to
someone that has taught us a lesson
that we now try to transmit to oth-
ers. Recognizing and experiencing
the music of Cantor Israel Fuchs
allows us to fulfill the mitzvah of
B'Shem Omro.
As a reflection of the teachings of
Judaism, the life works of Cantor
Israel Fuchs now represent an impor-
tant part of a legacy to lift the spirit
and a tree of life for those who will
take hold of it. ❑
