Federal Funds At
Stake Over Prayer

Washington/JTA — U.S. congressional
negotiators agreed to take federal funds
from school districts that unlawfully
restrict student prayer.
The legislators endorsed a provision to
require school districts to certify that
they protect students' rights to pray vol-
untarily in schools. If passed as part of
the 2001 education bill, the provision
would mark the first time that Congress
has tied federal funds to compliance
with Education Department prayer
guidelines.
Another provision in the bill calls for
extending funds to teach hate crimes
prevention in schools. Lawmakers insist
they will send the bill to the president
before the end of this year.

Mengele's Life

Rio de Janeiro/JTA — A film about
Nazi doctor Josef Mengele is shooting
in Brazil.
The film, which stars Charlton
Heston as Mengele, is based on the
true story of a 1977 visit by Mengele's
son to the "Angel of Death" iii Brazil.
The producers hope to premier the
film at the Cannes Film Festival in
2002, according to Variety magazine.
