heir evil message is the
much the same.
Hitler hated Jews and
democracy; Osama bin
Laden hates Jews and democracy —
and Americans as well, Rabbi Charles
Rosenzveig told some 900 people at
the Holocaust Memorial Center's
17th Anniversary Dinner on Oct. 28
in Detroit.
What happened before and during
World War II can be perfectly applied to
the perception that pervaded the Middle
East before Sept. 11, said Rabbi
Rosenzveig, executive director and
founder of the Holocaust Memorial
Center in West Bloomfield.
"Instead of the Jews being the only
perceived devils, they are now joined by
America," he said. "America has been
portrayed as the demon that controls
the world economy and stifles the reli-
gious, economic and political develop-
ment of the poor Middle Eastern coun-
tries."
Andrei Markovitz, a professor of
politics in the Department of
Germanic Languages and Literature at
the University of Michigan, gave the
keynote address.
The crowd was treated to an emo-

tional video presentation that told the
history of the HMC, which opened in
1984, and previewed the future move
to a new site at the former Old
Orchard Theatres on Orchard Lake
Road, north of 12 Mile, in Farmington
Hills.
No microphones were needed, but
were used anyway by the "three •
tenors," Cantors David Montefiore of
Congregation Beth Ahm, Harold
Orbach of Temple Israel and Stephen
Dubov of Temple Beth El, who took
turns filling the Renaissance Ballroom
at the Marriott Hotel-Renaissance
Center with their powerful voices. ❑
