zations that collect toys at
Christmas, like Toys for Tots, con-
centrate on younger children.
There's very little for teenagers. So
we give them all a gift, and some-
times it's the only gift they get."
Maxey has an 82 percent success
rate, said Lee Kraft, principal of
maximum secure facilities, meaning
only 18 percent are ever convicted of
another crime. That's an excellent
record, he said. While the institu-
tion's goal is rehabilitation, it's still a
prison, he said, and those confined
there live a very restricted life.
"The Landaus know that any per-
sonalization and comfort they can
provide for the boys is welcome," he
said. "Most people don't know any-
thing about us. The Landaus are
among the few who know what goes
on here. "
For the past five years, Lou
Landau has spoken at Maxey's peri-
odic career days, and encouraged
friends and former co-workers to
join him. One man confessed that
he had been at Maxey as a teenager,
and the school helped him turn his
life around.
The Landaus helped set up a vol-
unteer community advisory commit-
tee to raise funds and coordinate
activities to benefit the boys. They
hope to interest others in volunteer-
ing for the school, which has no
PTA or booster clubs. For any
extras," the boys need to rely on the
kindness of strangers.
Joy tells of being in Kmart, buying
socks for the Maxey boys. When the
sales clerk learned why she needed
hundreds of pairs, she told the
Landaus her son was at Maxey after
taking part in a robbery. "She raved
about how much they were helping
him," Joy said. "People should know
that Maxey is not hell on earth." ❑

In addition to candy which must
be wrapped — the Landaus are col
lecting-gift items suitable for
teenaged boys, Because Maxey is a
correctional facility, there are restric-
tiOTIS on what can be brought in.
The Landaus suggest art supplies,
board games, white athletic socks,
warm gloves and hats (size extra
large), basketballs and soccer balls.
They cannot accept model kits,
hockey equipment or spiral-bound
notebooks, and they don't need
street clothes because the boys wear
uniforms. All gifts must be new and,
with the exception of candy, must be
delivered unwrapped. The Landaus
can be reached at (248) 541-6884.
