"Great work
Gittleman"

IF YOU'VE DONE IT BEFORE, YOU KNOW
WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

That was certainly the case with Ingrid and Michael Day,
who had experience building previous homes prior to
selecting Gittleman Construction to provide roughly
1,800 square feet of addition and renovation space to
their 1960's Bloomfield Township residence.
"We have done a lot of building," Ingrid said. We've
never had a process go as smoothly as our job with
Gittleman. They said we would be out and back within
six months and they were true to their word. It's now
been about two years, and we've had no problems.
"Gittleman really knew what they were doing and it
showed. I'd recommend them to anyone."
So, if you're looking to add-on or remodel, why not put one of Southeast Michigan's most trusted names in
residential construction to work for you? With an emphasis on function, aesthetics and budget, Gittleman
Construction is committed to exceeding your highest expectations.

Melissa's Story
Was Inspiring

Thank you so much for the wonderful
story on Melissa Zagon and the
LUNGevity Foundation("Fighting A
Killer," Oct. 26, page 93). I had the
good fortune to attend the
LUNGevity benefit in Chicago last
weekend. I am pleased to report that
attendance and fund-raising expecta-
tions were exceeded.
At the time of Special Writer Bobbie
Lewis' interview of Melissa, Melissa
had indicated that the hope was for
attendance of 300 — the evening saw
more than 500 people in attendance.
As well, Melissa proudly reported at
the event that before any of the on-site
fund raising that took place that
evening (through a raffle and a very
lively silent auction), a sum in excess
of $100,000 had already been raised
by this fledgling organization.
To have the privilege of my friend
standing confidently and energetically
before the crowd in attendance the
other night was truly an awesome
thing. Again, my thanks go out to the
Jewish News for helping to tell this
story.

PRINCESS CRUISES'

Ship's Registrs, British

My husband and I had some of the
same thoughts regarding the Central
Synagogue (Editor's Notebook,
"Central To The Soul," Oct. 19, page
5). We were in New York City Sept.
28-30. On the 30th, we and friends
from Connecticut decided to go see
the Central Synagogue because we also
knew that it had just recently re-
opened after their fire.
We went inside (without being
searched) and were told to sit on the
side. We then found out that there
was to be a service that afternoon for a
fallen Jewish firefighter [a victim of
the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on
America]. He was one of the firefight-
ers going up Tower 1 while everyone
was trying to get down. Needless to
say, he did not make it!
The synagogue was filled with fire-
fighters, police, guests and people like
us who just wanted to be a part of this
very moving experience. I don't think
anyone who was there that afternoon

will soon forget what was said -- by
the firefighter's friends, family and the
mayor of New York. I know that we
felt so much closer to the people who
have suffered with this tragedy after
that day.
The rabbi told us that, when the
synagogue re-opened on Sept. 9, one
of the stained-glass windows had been
dedicated to the engine company that
had helped save the building in the
1998 fire.
An interesting side note: The Jewish
firefighter was named David Martin
Weiss and his children received cita-
tions from the governor of New York.

Together, We Can
Repair The World

Your opinion piece was right on target
("Teach 'Ern A Lesson," Oct. 19, page
29). The last two paragraphs sum up
the message we need to hear and we all
need to pass on to all people of all reli-
gions in the world. There is only one
way to fight hate — with education,
love and exposure to light.
We have no choice but to find a way
of accommodation with the
Palestinians, as incredibly impossible as
it sounds on the surface. We must do
it. We can do it.
In the same issue ("We Must All Do
Our Part To Perfect The World," Oct.
19, page 68), Rabbi Shlomo Riskin said
we are God's partners in tikkun olam,
helping to finish God's creation — the
only possible reason for our existence.
We need to take that charge seriously.
Sept. 11 has dramatically shown us
the enormous importance of meeting
with our neighbors, educating them
about us and ourselves about them.
Only then can we scale the walls of
prejudice and hate, and build relation-
ships devoid of fear and suspicion.
We all want the same things for our
children and grandchildren (and even
our great-grandchildren) — a chance to
live in peace under our own fig tree,
sharing the material benefits of our
modern world. When we are all in the
same boat (and we are), no one will
want to drill a hole underneath our
own seat.
