"But the fact is, this is not a Jewish sex manual," he says. "It's less Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Sex and more "What Does the Jewish Tradition Say About Sex?" • When the Union of American Hebrew Congregations came to the West Bloomfield rabbi, who has authored other learning publications for them, they wanted him to write a book on text study, but with a curricu- lum that would draw readers. He drew on the experience of teach- ing a "Sex in the Text" course at his synagogue for several years. "For the book, I chose short snippets and inter- spersed my comments to make it accessible," he says. Looking to include various sources, including Torah, Bible and Midrash, he turned to Jennifer Tisdale, a Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion rabbinical stu- dent. "She acted as my research assis- tant, digging out more esoteric texts and helping me with some of the translations," Rabbi Yedwab says. He wrote the book to be used by educators in any high school or adult education class. A final chapter deals with the Reform Jewish view on how issues such as non-marital sex, homo- sexuality and abortion have changed with time. The rabbi's current project is a book about text study and God, also to be published by UAHC Press, in September 2002. — "Sex in the Texts" review by Shelli Liebman Dorfman, staff writer ❑ From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 11, these_local authors will be on hand in the Janice Charach Epstein Museum/Gallery to talk about their work and sign individual copies of their books: Elana Ackerman and Lynne Schreiber, In the Shadow of the Tree, Tom Ackerman, Guide to Careers in Law Enforcement; Irwin Cohen, Echoes of Detroit: A 300-Year History; Edith Covensky, Steps; Zvi Gitelman, A Century of mbivalence; Jacqueline Grekin, Medicine for the Mind; Marcy Heller Fisher, The Outdoor Museum: The Magic of Michigan's Marshall M Fredericks; Samuel Honig, Reunions; Beth Greenbaum, Bearing Witness: Teaching About the Holocaust; Kenneth Kirshenbaum, A Great Miracle Happened to Me; Denise Rodgers, A Little Bit of Nonsense: A Wacky Poetry Collection; Douglas Ruben, Treating Adult Children of Alcoholics; Aliza Shevrin, The Further Adventures of Menachem-Mendl; Frank Singer, Help!
