he Local Author Fair has
become an increasingly
popular segment of the
Jewish Community Center
of Metropolitan Detroit's Annual
Jewish Book Fair.
This year, 23 local authors will gath-
er from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov.
11, in the Janice Charach Epstein
Gallery at the West Bloomfield JCC to
sign copies of their books and discuss
their works with inter-
ested readers.
Four of the authors
— Rabbi Herbert
Yoskowitz, The

Kaddish Minyan;
Wendy Rose Bice, A
Timeless Treasure: 100
Years of Fresh Air
Camps; Judith Cantor,
Jews in Michigan; and
Rabbi Paul Yedwab,
Sex in the Texts — will
be featured speakers.
Now in its sixth year,
the "fair within a fair"
was developed as a way
to recognize local
authors within their own community.
"The Local Author Fair has gotten
larger every year," said co-chair
Marilyn Weiss. "Last year we had
about 17 authors. It's become a real
success story."
Irene Winkler, who has co-chaired
the Local Author Fair with Weiss for
the past five years, said, "This year we
had more requests than ever from
authors wanting to participate. The
writers enjoy meeting the public, and
also enjoy having a chance to meet
and talk with each other."
Both co-chairs, who have volun-
teered for Book Fair in other capacities
for many years, enjoy working with
the locally based authors.
"It's more up front and personal,"
Winkler said.
What follows is just a small taste of
what the Local Author Fair has to offer.

21 Timeless Treasure'

When she was approached to compile
a history of the Fresh Air Society's first

100 years, author Wendy Rose Bice
had no idea it would become a 230-
page, 2 '/2-year "labor of love."

A Timeless Treasure: 100 Years of
Fresh Air Society Camp (Fresh Air
Society; $47.70) chronicles, in exact-
ing detail, the history of the Fresh Air
camps from the first summer of 1902
to the present-day Camp Tamarack.
The book is filled with hundreds of
photographs, historical facts, statistics
and personal vignettes spanning the
entire century of camping history.
Author Rose Bice was amazed to find

that all of the minutes from the Fresh
Air -Society board of directors meetings
had been preserved. She also sorted
through reams of information stored in
the Leonard N. Simons Jewish
Community Archives, the Rabbi Leo
M. Franklin Archives at Temple Beth
El and numerous other sources.
She -interviewed more than 200 peo-
ple, including past and present
campers, staff members and Fresh Air
Society board members.
"Basically, the book consumed my
life, especially the last 12 months,"
said Rose Bice, who appreciates her
family's cooperation during the long
nights and weekends of research and
writing. Rose Bice lives in Huntington
Woods with her husband, Gary, and
their three children, Emily, Jacob and
Abigail.
"Although I grew up in Oak Park,
I was never a Tamarack camper," said
Rose Bice. "I thought that might be
a detriment in writing the book, but
it actually helped me to be more
objective."
