When early in the morning of Oct.
7, I heard about a terrorist attack in
Kibbutz Shluchot, I wasn't sure I
heard it right ("Kibbutz Man Dies
In Suicide Attack," page 28, Oct.
12).
Kibbutz Shluchot is a religious
kibbutz in Emek -Beit Shean (Jordan
Valley), five kilometers from the
town of Beit Shean, deep within the
Green Line. It is also the kibbutz
where our cousins Hava and Yehuda,
and their five children, live.
It was first reported that there
were two suicide bombers in a"car
parked at the gate of the kibbutz,
but soon, the bitter truth was dis-
covered. Yair Mordechai, a 44-year-
old kibbutz member and a father of
five, saw a car with a driver, asked
him what he was doing and paid
with his life. At the time, the kib-
butz children were enjoying their
breakfast in the beautifully decorat-
ed communal sukkah while most of
the men where praying Shacharit in
the synagogue.. It soon became
known that the kibbutz lost one of
their family, but also that by his
death, he saved God knows how
many souls, including children.
The sudden appearance of a sui-
cide bomber at the gate of Kibbutz
Shluchot is a hard blow to the mem-
bers' sense of security, however. Also
dealt a devastating blow are those in
Israel or abroad who still clung to
the notion that the settlements and
the continued "occupation" of the
territories are the only impediments
to peace with the Palestinians.
I can't recall ever a suicide bomber
to appear in a kibbutz so deep with-
in the Green Line. From now on, no
community in the West Bank, Gaza
or Israel — no city, village or kib-
butz — is safe from the scourge of
terrorism.

What Must
Precede A Truce

The United States seems to believe
that a peaceful Middle East is
important to the area's stability
("Bush Nudges Peace Process," Oct.
5, page 20).

The primary reasons for the ongo-
ing lack of a truce are Hezbollah
and Hamas, which have stated that
their goal is the destruction of Israel.
Even if Yasser Arafat, leader of the
Palestinian Authority, were able to
obtain a temporary halt to
Palestinian violence, he cannot con-
trol these two militant organiza-
tions. These are supported by con-
tinuous aid in weapons, money and
backup from Syria.
There is no point in leaning on
Israel, which is constantly attacked
and must respond, just because we
have no one else to push. Perhaps it
is time for a joint U.S. and Israel
ultimatum to Syria to halt its sup-
port of Hamas and Hezbollah with-
in a specified time, not only from
Syria's own resources, but also what
passes through Syria from Iraq and
Iran.
This has been going on for
decades and it is time to stop; only
then would there be a chance for a
truce between the Palestinians and
Israel.

Thanks To
NCJW

The National Council of Jewish
Women is very interested in seniors.
They always plan how to bring
enjoyment to these people.
We who are interested in their
programs get on the mailing list and
they notify us about various .pro-
grams. All they charge us is a mini-
mum amount for transportation to
the affairs.
On Oct. 12, we were privileged to
go to Temple Israel. What a concert!
It featured Cantor Harold Orbach
and his charming wife, Evelyn, who
narrated her husband's songs ("A
World of Song," Oct. 19, page 30).
It was priceless, evoking memories
and a few tears.
After the concert, the members of
the temple served refreshments. It
was all delicious. It was a great ges-
ture on the part of NCJW. It was
simply beautiful. Words can't express
our gratitude for all they do, includ-
ing Meals on Wheels.
