of Orthodox Jews to what he discov-
ered in contemporary research.
When Dr. Kurz, an orthopedic
spinal surgeon, asked Rabbi Kelemen .
where he could read more about the
subject, the rabbi explained that his
lectures came from an extensive pile
of research. Dr. Kurz remembers
telling him, "You've got to write a
book — you can change people's
lives."
After some discussion with his wife
and reorganization of his schedule at
Neve Yerushalayim Women's College
of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, where
he is a counselor and professor of
education, the rabbi set out to turn
his research into To Kindle a Soul.

CO

Rabbi Kelemen, a Los Angeles
native, was once a California down-
hill ski instructor and a news direc-
tor and anchor at KMMT-FM radio
in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. He is a
University of California at Los
Angeles graduate who earned his
teaching credentials at Harvard
University in Boston.
He now lives in Israel with his
wife and five children, moving there
15 years ago after visiting several
countries in search of what he terms
some system for making good kids."
After a short time, he found him-
self in the midst of a major research
project.
"I was looking at the most tradi-
tional families in Jerusalem and
B'nei B'rak (an ultra-Orthodox-
inhabited suburb of Jerusalem) and I
saw the way they raise their kids
matches what the most significant
studies from modern, secular
research shows," he says.
In addition to gaining relation-
ship-altering information for readers,
writing the book also brought a sig-
nificant transformation for Rabbi
Kelemen. During the course of his
research, he became Orthodox and
received rabbinic ordinations from
.
the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem and the
Av Beis Din of Jerusalem.
"The book is about actualizing
your potential," Dr. Kurz says. "It's
about relationships and realizing that
you can't be a great parent without
being a great person. This is the for-
mula to make you the greatest per-
son you can be based on the poten-
tial God gave each and every one of
us."
With chapters on non-physical

discipline, love, education and even
television, Rabbi Kelemen reveals an
ancient system for raising independ-
ent, confident, secure children.
He focuses on better learning
environments for hyperactive kids;
effects of food, sleep and exercise on
learning and behavior; and bedtime
and problem-solving formulas. He
cites ways to avoid violence, depres-
sion, anxiety and ADD and ADHD
in children, using information gath-
ered from Jewish sects and supported
by modern studies from universities
including Harvard, Yale and Brown.

Touring With A System

During much of his eight-city
American book tour, which has
included TV and radio interviews,
Rabbi Kelemen has been accompa-
nied by Dr. Kurz.
"I have attended his talks over and
over," Dr. Kurz says. "Each time I
laugh and I cry."
The rabbi's parents, who live in
Los Angeles, also attended all six of
his introductory lectures when the
tour took him there.
The tour includes an upcoming
trip to Washington, D.C., where the
rabbi will discuss the book's implica-
tions for educational reform with
Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn.,
who introduced the current House
and Senate New Democrat
Coalition's Three R's education pro-
posal.
"Because of his stance on educa-
tion I sent him the manuscript,"
Rabbi Kelemen says. "Hadassah read
it first." Sen. Lieberman's reaction to
the book, which he describes as
"practical, sobering, invaluable," is
on its front cover.
"Detroit and Larry launched the
book," says Rabbi Kelemen. He cites
Dr. Kurz in a nearly 200-word
acknowledgment on the first page of
the book.
"Larry had this wild-eyed vision
that the world is ready to hear about
ancient Jewish wisdom," Rabbi
Kelemen says.
After traveling with and observing
the rabbi in interviews, lectures and
daily life, Dr. Kurz sees Rabbi
Kelemen as one who truly believes
what he is teaching.
"I see him as someone who prac-
tices and lives every single thing he
preaches," he says.
