they experienced in World War II Europe.
"It's important for our community to honor
these people and make a record for posterity,"
says Silow, who plans on using the photos and
text for a possible book.
"They went through unspeakable horrors
and then worked hard in Detroit to turn their
lives around. We want to show that these are
resilient, incredible human beings."
The project, begun two years ago, had two pre-
liminary smaller exhibitions at the Jewish
Community Center in Oak Park. Rather than
archival photographs, the focus is on the way the
people look today, and were taken by Krista Husa
of the Detroit Jewish News,Tom Kirby and Dean
Randa77o of Blue Sky Photography, and Silow.
Sponsors of the exhibit include DMC/Sinai-
Grace Hospital's Program for Holocaust
Survivors and Families, the Jewish Fund, the
Jewish Community Center, Shaarit Haplaytah,
United Social Club and C.H.A.I.M. (Children

of Holocaust Survivors Association in Michigan).
The text committee, made up of children of
survivors, includes Janet Antin, Patricia Bernstein,
Rosa Chessler, Barbara Cohen, Helen Cozzetto,
Marilyn Feingold, Debra Feldman, Rita
Geiringer, Sarah Hartman-Silow, Natalie Iglewicz,
Allene Koby, Eva Kraus, Morry Levin, Rene
Lichtman, David Oliwek, Sandra Silver, Sherry
Shanbom, Erika Singer and Cindi Wagner.
Exhibit planners are working on special pro-
grams to explore survival and the emotions
associated with feeling threatened and insecure,
relating those feelings to the terrorist attacks.
The film Image B e fore My Eyes will be shown
7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29.
A symposium, "Accomplishments of Survivors
in Detroit Past and Present," begins 2 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 2. Participants in the discussions
will include Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig, founder
and executive director of the Holocasut
Memorial Center in West Bloomfield, Ruth
Lehman and Abraham Weberman.

The film Genocide will be screened 2 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 9.
U-M-Dearborn Professor Sidney Bolkosky
will discuss his new book, Searching for Meaning
in the Holocaust, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13.

"Portraits of Honor: Detroit's Holocaust
Survivors" will be on display Nov. 8-Dec.
31 at the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery at
the West Bloomfield Jewish Community
Center. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Sundays, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays-
Wednesdays and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursdays.
