Arab nations that have tied the disaster
to American support for Israel or to
some sort of Israeli secret plot.
Historically, efforts by the Jewish peo-
ple to eradicate anti-Semitism have not
worked, he explained. Attempts to
counter contradictory accusations —
that Jews are dirty and poor, spoiled and
wealthy, zealots and liberals, cruel and
cowardly— have included forming
interfaith councils, assimilating and
helping humanity through successful
involvement in the arts and sciences. Yet,
according to the rabbi, anti-Semitism
persists.
To make sense of the phenomenon,
Rabbi Jacobovitz broke the topic down
into religious anti-Semitism and
social/political anti-Semitism. He refer-
enced a talmudic commentary that
explained the root of the word "Sinai"
(referring to Mt. Sinai, where Jews
received the Torah) is sinah, Hebrew for
"hatred."
Becoming the Chosen People
brought jealousy and hatred in its wake,
he said. Still, he continued, "the Torah
tells us: 'Thou shalt not worry about it.'
Divine protection is promised to those
who uphold the Torah and keep the
mitzvot," he said.
On the other hand, Rabbi Jacobovitz
explained that social/ political anti-
Semitism is foretold in Deuteronomy as
a curse resulting from forsaking Jewish
life. Rather than quell anti-Semitism, the
rabbi expressed the view that assimila-
tion only exacerbates the problem.
"This is the type of anti-Semitism we
can do something about," he said.
Participants seemed to appreciate his
candor in dealing with the complex
topic.
Said Guido Aidenbaum of West
Bloomfield: "It's way past the time
where, as a people, we can measure our
words, or think we can engage in a giant
group hug and all our problems will go
away. It's time to accept the lessons reali-
ty teaches us."
