n a significantly noticeable
irony, a new sign dedicated to
the long-standing Temple
Beth El congregation includ-
ed a description of the role temple
architect Minoru Yamasaki played
as designer of the World Trade
Center in New York City, site of
one of the Sept 11 terrorist attacks.
"Rabbi David Castiglione, who
spoke at the ceremony, did not
mention it," says Holly Teasdle,
archivist at the Rabbi Leo M.
Franklin Archives of Temple Beth
El. "He wanted it known that this
was a celebration, a new beginning
and a time to look forward."
The Oct. 7 ceremony brought
125 guests outside the synagogue to
witness the dedication of the histor-
ical marker, which was placed by
the Michigan Historical
Commission.

The two-side sign commemo-
rates both the 150th anniversary
of the foundinc, of Beth El and the
current Bloomfield
b
Township
building, built in 1973.
Samuel Logan of the Michigan
Historical Commission made the
presentation to the group that
included members of the original
founding families of the syna-
gogue and nine past presidents.
The marker is the third histori-
cal tribute for Temple Beth El._
The others commemorate the
Lafayette Street Cemetery in
Detroit and the home of Isaac and
Sarah Cozens in Detroit. The
Cozens home was the site of the
first Jewish religious services in
Michigan, and eventually become
Beth El.
Robert Canvasser, a Beth El
past president, was on hand to
accept all three tributes. ❑
