he North Farmington High
School girls tennis team
Nvrappeci up a fourth-place
finish in the state Division 2 tourna-
ment, held in Holland last Friday and
Saturday.
The Raiders "did pretty well," said
coach Joe Brennan. "We thought any-
where from third or fourth to seventh
was possible." North Farmington's sin-
gles players all reached the semifinals:
Emily Jaffe at No. 1, Bethany Nestor
at No. 2, Amy Berke at No. 3 and
Kelly Davis at No. 4. All but Davis
are Jewish.
Three of the Raiders four doubles
teams reached the quarterfinals,
including livlichelle Boothroyd and
Chrissy Dwyer at No. 1. Allison Kay
and Kimmy Solarz at No. 2, plus Sara
Williams and Alyssa Trotsky at No. 4.
Solarz, Williams and Trotsky are
Jewish.
The Williams-Trotsky duo scored a
major upset along the way, as the
unseeded pair defeated the second
seeded team, from Okemos, in the
second round. Okemos went on to
win the team championship by a
-
point.
"That win sent shockwaves through
the tournament. That was big,"
Brennan said.
The Raiders' fourth-place finish
improved on last year's 11th place
spot:.
"If we can make up that much more
ground next year we would have a
:h.ance" for a state title, Brennan said.
`We're losing some seniors. Bethany
Nestor will be a very difficult person
to replace. But we have a lot of young
players who gained some experience
and that should be helpful.
"We have some nice players waiting
in the wings on the junior varsity level
and we've got a couple eighth-graders
who'll be coming in. So the future
looks bright." ❑
