Rabbi Kelemen is a professor of
education at Neve Yerushalayim
College of Jewish Studies for Women
in Jerusalem.
A dairy lunch should be brought to
the session on Monday. A dessert
reception will follow Tuesday
evening's talk. The event chairs are

Two special learning events will recall
late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach on
Thursday, Nov. 1.
A noon brown bag lunch and
learn will take place at a central loca-
tion to be announced; cost is $7.
An evening consisting of Maariv,
stories and song will take place 7
p.m. at Congregation B'nai Moshe;
$10 per person (maximum $18 per
household). Proceeds will be donated
to the Reb Shlomo Carlebach
Foundation. The rabbi died in 1994.
The event is co-sponsored by
Congregation Shir Tikvah, Eilu
v'Eilu, the Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit, the Cantors
Council of Metropolitan Detroit and
the Cantors Assembly Tri-Sate
Region.

Cancer Support
Plans Fall Session

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute, in collaboration with Rabbi
Michael Moskowitz at Temple Shir
Shalom, will offer a faith-based spiri-
tual support group for Jewish cancer
patients, survivors and their family
members.
The group will meet 7-8:30 p.m.
on nine Tuesdays, starting Oct. 23, at
Temple Shir Shalom.
Participants will:
• Explore how religious beliefs and
Jewish practices can help the patient
feel more in control of the cancer
experience
• Explore personal spirit-building
with hands-on experiences
• Identify tools within Judaism —
belief in God, prayer and ritual —
that can provide comfort, hope and
and help in reframing negative
thoughts
• Be supported by others living
through a similar experience
The group will be led by therapist
Brenda Beron and social worker
Patricia Milner Sachs, both cancer
survivors.
Sessions will also address uncertain-
ty, helplessness, lack of control, the
doctor-patient relationship, treatment
related concerns, self and body image,
the effect illness has on family,
reordering life and personal goals,
social relationships, and "Why me?"
