passed. It's time to move on and begin
to heal. But many Americans feel
guilty for laughing and enjoying
themselves when thousands of our
countrymen are entombed in the rub-
ble. What are we to do?
When I was younger and more
ignorant about Jewish customs, I
questioned why we always had to
include a somber reminder in all our
joyous occasions. Jewish couples pause
ever so briefly at a wedding and step
on a glass to remember the destruc-
tion of the Temple, one of the worst
events in Jewish history. We sprinkle a
little salt on weekly challah to remind
us of the tears Jews shed during the
centuries.
America now needs to create a ritual
to help remind us of America's Tisha
b'Av, the holiday commemorating the
destruction of the Temple. Just as dur-
ing the Passover seder we say, "In every
generation, we see ourselves as if we
were part of the Exodus from Egypt
Americans need to commemorate
this event so that we never forget the
thousands who lost their lives and the
unity it created. It has to be ingrained
in our culture so we don't slip back to
our old, unappreciative ways.
Creating a day, a special day, on our
calendar is not enough. Memorial
Day, which was supposed to set aside
a day to remember the thousands who
kept this country free, has literally
become another day at the beach.
Look at Israel. Her Memorial Day is
a somber occasion. Every year, the
country stops for a minute regardless
of where they are and remembers
those who have fallen in her defense.
Cars literally stop in the middle of
traffic. The United States needs to
adopt that ritual. Every Sept. 11 at
8:48 a.m., we need to sound our fire
and emergency sirens to make people
stop and take note. Reflect on and
remember the people murdered. Just
as significantly, it will help us remem-
ber what's important.
Before Sept. 11, 2001, our values
and priorities were out of alignment.
One day changed all that, and we
cannot let the resulting emotions fade
with time. The country needs this
memory etched into our souls as a
permanent reminder of what's impor-
tant. The Jewish example of annual
and weekly rituals are the best way to
keep it all in perspective, to keep our
sense of unity.
