Ukrainian Missile
Takes Down Plane

Kiev/JTA — Ukraine's president said
Sunday that a missile fired during
military exercises was the most likely
cause of an explosion that brought
down a Sibir Airlines jet in the Black
Sea, killing 78 people, including 66
Israelis.
President Leonid Kuchma had ear-
lier denied a claim by U.S. intelli-
gence officials that a Ukrainian mis-
sile hit the jet on Oct. 4. But
Ukrainian officials have gradually
been changing their stance.
On Saturday, Ukraine's defense
minister, Olexander Kuzmuk, issued
an apology for the incident.

Vandals Mar
Dutch Museum

Amsterdam/JTA — Vandals spray-
painted swastikas and Jewish stars
Saturday on the buildings of a Dutch
museum commemorating the Nazi
deportation camp at Westerbork.
Police were investigating the van-
dalism at the museum, located near
the Dutch city of Assen. Some
107,000 Dutch Jews, including
famed diarist Anne Frank, passed
through Westerbork en route to Nazi
death camps. Only about 5,000 sur-
vived the camps and returned to the
Netherlands.
