DuBowski hopes the film will con-
tinue to promote discussion about a
previously taboo subject.
"The whole point of this is to find
a grapevine of support in Orthodox
communities — putting a human
face on what was once an abstract
issue," he says. "To help Jews who are
suffering." ❑

homosexual behavior.
"The film assumes that same-sex
attraction is irreversible, and there-
fore cannot be morally proscribed.
"While it is true that the Torah
and Halachah [Jewish law] unequiv-
ocally prohibit homosexual acts,"
Jessel writes, "there are a growing
number of Orthodox rabbis, educa-
tors and therapists who offer
encouragement and support to
struggling homosexuals [who want
to change their sexual orientation]."
JCC Lenore Marwil Jewish Film
Festival director David Magidson of
Bloomfield Township previewed
Trembling Before G-d with Orthodox
relatives — whose reactions were

similar to Jessel's.
"That's the center of the movie,"
says Magidson. "The Orthodox say,
`You want to be Orthodox? — Fine.
Just don't do this stuff anymore.'"
Director DuBowski succeeds in
depicting the conflict with a uni-
versal human appeal, Magidson
says. "That's why the movie's so
powerful.
"Although it's overtly about
homosexuality and Orthodoxy, it's
really about being an insider and
being an outsider — and what it
means when people devoutly want
to be inside the comfort of a reli-
gion, but are forced into outsider
status."
