Rabbinical student
JELS recipient
With assistance from the JVS Jewish Educational Loan Service
(JELS), Joshua is one step closer to realizing his life goal - to
become Rabbi Joshua Hearshen. He's already an MSU graduate
and looks forward to attending the rabbinical program at the
University of Judaism in Los Angeles this fall. Joshua is
appreciative of JVS and the Hebrew Free Loan Association for
making this possible. Through the JELS program. these
organizations provide Joshua and other Jewish students with
interest-free loans to attend undergraduate. technical or
graduate schools. Helping young people further their education
is at the heart of how Jewish values make dreams come true.

wound) and blowing themselves up in
order to murder Jews is a despicable
and cowardly form of abuse perpetrat-
ed and affirmed by some Arab and
Persian nations.
It is upsetting, therefore, to hear the
regional director of the Arab-
American Anti-Discrimination
Committee describe Hamas and
Hezbollah as human rights organiza-
tions. Which humans?
Thank you for introducing and
exposing these views to our communi-
ty. I am sad, but I recognize that only
in America are Terry Ahwal, Imam
Elahi and Imam El-Amin able to safe-
ly express their more liberal views.
Nonetheless, it gave me hope to read
amidst the hyperbole of some inter-
views, there remains the kol clMamah

and courage.

The New York Times reported Oct. 2
that prior to the Sept. 11 catastrophe,
the Bush administration was prepar-
ing to unveil a new strategy vis-a-vis
the Israel-Palestinian conflict. It
favored the establishment of a
Palestinian state in the West Bank and
Gaza and would call upon Israel to
halt its security measures against
Palestinian terror (see the Jewish News,
"Small Steps Forward," Sept. 28, page
24).
The U.S. strategy allegedly includes
the "return" of a tidal wave of
Palestinian refugees into the West
Bank-Gaza and beyond, a plan the
Israelis consider as threatening the
very existence of the Jewish state.
The new American initiative is
directly attributable to the American
war against global terrorism and its
ill-conceived desire to induce
Palestinian Authority leader Yasser
Arafat to join the worldwide coalition
against terrorism. This, notwithstand-
ing the fact that Arafat is the world's
most notorious terrorist, an ally of
Iraq's Saddam Hussein, whose links
with such terrorist groups as Hamas,
Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah and the ter-
rorist cells sheltered by Syria, are
indubitably linked with Osama bin
Laden and other terrorist cells operat-
ing globally.
