Hospice Marks Rosh Hashanah

Revving Up

Danny Siegel, author, poet and founder of the Zvi Tzedakah Fund, speaks at
Ignition 2002, an evening of education and motivation about the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Annual Campaign 2002. More than 130
people attended Ignition 2002, which took place Sept. 6 at Yeshivat Akiva in
Southfield.

Mark Mordukhovich of Oak Park, a
volunteer at the Jewish Community
Center, was named poet of the year
(2000)' by the Worldwide Pushkin
Society. Mordukhovich participates
in the Russian Acculturation
Program at the JCC and is a mem-
ber of its Fans of the Arts group.

Lois Shaevsky of Bloomfield Hills
received the Volunteer Recognition
Award from the Children's Center
in Detroit. Shaevsky, who recently
became a board member for the
organization, worked with its devel-
opment department to attract event
sponsors and potential committee
members, donors and volunteers.
The center assists children and fami-
lies with foster care, family bereave-
ment and chemical dependency.

David FlIman, 2001 graduate of
Bloomfield Hills Andover High
School, was one of 10 college fresh-
men nationwide named 2001

March of Dimes Youth Leadership
Scholars. He will receive a $2,500
college scholarship. He has been
active with March of Dimes for 12
years, as a Goodwill Ambassador
and a member of the board. Ellman
is studying broadcast journalism at
Northwestern University in
Evanston, Ill.

Julie I. Fershtman of Bingham
Farms and Daniel M. Levy of
Detroit have been installed as State
Bar of Michigan Representative
Assembly chairperson and clerk,
respectively, for 2001-2002.

Elana Erdstein of Huntington
Woods is one of six 2001-2002
Eisendrath legislative assistants for
the Religious Action Center of
Reform Judaism in Washington. She
earned a bachelor of arts degree in
religion from Duke University in
Durham, N.C., with a minor in
women's studies.

Idelle Neauvirth with Debby Tukel and her sons Bradley, Matthew and
Connor participated in the Rosh Hashanah ceremony and dinner at Hospice
of Michigan's Farmington Hills home.

Residents of Hospice of Michigan's Farmington Hills Hospice Home were able
to gather with their families on Sept. 16 to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.
The ceremony and dinner were held in the home's dining room and on its
deck, with more than 50 residents and family members enjoying the traditional
dinner.

Israel, China

Classes Focus On
Skill Building

The American Jewish Committee
Metropolitan Detroit Chapter and the
Association of Chinese Americans will
host "The China Connection," an
exploration of Israel and China rela-
tions, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at
Mei Ling Vegetarian Restaurant, 6175
Haggerty, West Bloomfield.
The speaker will be Professor
Jonathan Adelman from the Graduate
School of International Studies at the
University of Denver.
Tickets are $25 per person, which
includes a Chinese dinner buffet and
the evening's program. Reservations

The Jewish Association for Residential
Care and the Jewish Vocational
Service will co-host a series of skill-
building and enrichment classes for
adults with developmental disabilities.
The series will be at JVS in
Southfield on Wednesday evenings
6:30-8 p.m. The series costs $25 and
will run through May.
The program is named for Nora
and Guy Baron.
JVS and JARC staff will teach the
classes. Topics will include: Problem
Busters, Leisure Time Exploration,
Cooking 101, Exercise, Let's Be
Artists, Protect Yourself — Don't be a
Victim.
