Academy Hosts
Open House

The Jewish Academy of Metropolitan
Detroit will host a high school open
house to introduce its faculty and
programs 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct.
18, at the Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield.
The program will include a presen-
tation, an opportunity to meet with
faculty and tour the facility. The
Jewish Academy is accepting applica-
tions for ninth through 12th grades
for the 2002-2003 school year.
The Jewish Academy is an inde-
pendent, coeducational Jewish day
high school offering a college prepara-
tory curriculum integrated with
inclusive Jewish studies.

Cancer Association
Honors Professor

The Israel Cancer Association of
Michigan will honor Dr. Michael A.
Tainsky, professor of oncology and
director of molecular biology and
genetics at the Barbara Ann Karmanos
Cancer Institute and the Wayne State
University School of Medicine. The
event will be 5:30
p.m. Wednesday,
Nov. 28, at the
Young Israel of
Oak Park.

dent, Tainsky came
to the Detroit area
in 1998 from the
M.D. Anderson
Dr. Michael
Cancer
Center in
Tainsky
Houston. His work
has pioneered the
role of cell cycle checkpoint genes
involved in genomic instability and
how they result in inheritance of can-
cer in families.
Dinner co-chairs are Dr. Barabara
Kappy and Mrs. Agi Rubin. Tickets

The Michigan Chapter has raised
funds for 20 years to help Israel fight
cancer. Most recently, the chapter
helped fund a mobile mammography
unit, which will be used to reach
women in remote areas.
