AUCTION AT THE

"As an adult, I replicated that pattern

established as a child," she says. "Since
my father taught me this dangerous
relationship was love, I sought out men
who were emotionally dangerous."
In Love Sick, Silverman — twice mar-
ried and divorced with no children —
recounts her past experiences and explores
why she confused sex with love. She
writes about her indiscretions and sexual
partners, including an older married man,
an obscene telephone caller and a stranger
in a red Corvette parked in front of her
dorm at Boston University-.
She also tells about her therapist and
an all-female treatment center that
helped her fight her sexual addiction
and end the cycle of self-destruction.
"I did not have the tools or
resources to find real love or spiritual-
ity — the only tool I had was to find
another man," she says. "Being with
this group of women at rehab, along
with my therapist — my I I th — is
what helped me the most.
Silverman says she wrote the book
for women in particular. - There is so
much shame around sexual addition,
and I felt I was finally in a safe
enough place to talk about it and
hopefully lessen the shame for anyone
with this problem," she says. "I see
the book as a message of hope.
Both of Silverman's parents died
before the publication of her books. She
says she feels anger toward her mother as
well, for not intervening on her behalf.
"I don't think I would have gotten
an apology or recognition anyway, and
it's more important for me to confront
the issues within myself, through my
writing and therapy," she adds.
Presently, Silverman, who grew up in
Washington, D.C., the Virgin Islands
and New Jersey, is busy writing and
living in Grand Haven, Mich. Her sec-
ond husband, whom she calls Andrew
in the book, was a college professor
and landed a job as head of the English
department at Grand Valley State
University near Grand Rapids.
"Shortly after we moved here, I got
divorced," she says. "But I liked living
in Michigan so much, I stayed on."
As for her own state of mind,
Silverman says it's been a long road to
recovery, but she is doing well.
"I have been sexually sober for 10
years," she explains. "It doesn't mean I
am celibate. It means that now, sex
for me is only something that hap-
pens in a loving, committed, emo-
tionally intimate relationship.
"I am dating a man who is loving
and caring. And as for my Jewishness,
while I never felt part of the Jewish
community growing up, I do now."
