A concert held with the African
American community included
Abraham Ellstein's opera, The Thief and
the Hangman, dealing with the subject
of hunger, brought donations of food
and clothing to the Mother Waddles
Perpetual Mission in Detroit.
Looking to welcome members of the
Chaldean community to the neighbor-
hoods near Temple Israel in 1990,
Cantor Orbach planned a joint presen-
tation titled "Bridges to Understanding."
"Little did we realize when we set the
concert theme, after more than a year of
meetings and preparation, that it would
take place during a time that Israel and
Iraq would be at war," he says of the
concert that went on as planned.
"We sang of peace," the cantor says of
the program, broadcast on numerous
radio programs throughout the country.
A Temple Israel-sponsored concert in
1993 invited a Muslim musical group
to sing with members of the synagogue.
"The Dawah Ensemble sang the words
of the Koran and we the words of our
Bible as we joined in harmonious rela-
tionship," Cantor Orbach says.
Cantor Orbach has also performed on
many occasions with jazz composer and
pianist Dave Brubeck. "He wrote The
Gates ofJustice, dedicated to racial unity
and religious harmony, which we record-
ed in 1969," the cantor says. "We per-
formed at symphony halls all over the
United States, including Detroit. My
part represents the works of the Bible."

Music, Music, Music

At Temple Israel, Cantor Orbach says,
"I always took a multi-track approach
to the music of the synagogue. Never
wanting to abandon the great classics of
our tradition, but, at the same time,
encouraging the 'now' sound of religion,
I encouraged our temple to have multi-
track services that fulfilled the needs of
as many members of our congregation
as possible.
"We have performed services in rock,
in jazz, Klezmer-style and, of course,
encouraged participatory services."
In addition to his duties at Temple
Israel, Cantor Orbach also has been
able to continue to perform worldwide
and record music and movie back-
ground music.
In the general music scene, he per-
formed with singer Ella Fitzgerald in
the kickoff concert for the American
bicentennial celebration in
Philadelphia in 1976.
He also has created many new tenor
roles, including those for Julius Chajes'
opera Out of the Desert, Ellstein's The
Thief and the Hangman, Gershon

(Typical Swedes. No flashing lights. No confetti.
Just a great deal.)
